Area P3 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest 2009

The results of Area P3 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest 2009 are:

Humorous Speech
Champion : Mark Pui
1st Runner-Up : Meera Raman

Evaluation Contest
Champion : Terrence Dass
1st Runner-Up : Mior Nasir Mior Nazri
2nd Runner-Up : Wah Li Lian

A note of thanks to Khoo for participating in the Evaluation Contest and same as well to Victor and Ellie for taking up role play in assisting the Contest Chairman and Stephen for your support. Winning and losing is part of the game but what's important is that we have contributed towards the success of the Contest through participation and by being there to give our support to our own Area P3 Contest.

Overall, all the 6 clubs within the Area P3 participated in at least one of the two contests held on 15 August 2009. Personally, I'm extremely proud that Metro has representatives for contestant, role player and supporter. No worries if you have missed out this contest as we have Division level contest for 3 divisions in Klang Valley which are under District 51, i.e. Divisions C, W and P. The higher the level, the better quality of the contestants you can expect. So, if you have not been to any Toastmaster contest, this is the time for you to see with your own eyes.

In March 2010, we have another round of contest. So, if you have missed out the opportunity to be a contestant this round, not to worry...... we have the International Speech Contest for you to display your talent in speech presentation sometime in February/March next year.

Great efforts! Well done!!

From VPE of Metro Toastmasters International Club.

Let's Speak up

Abraham Lincoln said "It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubts". How interesting !

I grew up in a typical Asian culture.
When I was a child, I was told to be quiet at almost anything
I was told to be quiet when elders are talking;
I was told to be quiet at public places;
I was told to be quiet at school;
I was told to be quiet all the times so much so that I have the impression that being quiet is a good thing to do and speaking up my mind is a bad thing to do.

While that has made me become more adaptable and tolerant to my surrounding,
I realised in later years that being quiet has put me in great disadvantage in corporate world.

Because I was not used to speaking up my mind,
I tend to be quiet in meetings;
I tend to keep ideas to myself and;
I tend to accept whatever is being said.

Because I was not used to speaking up my mind,
I didn't have the courage to converse with superiors;
I didn't have the courage to ask questions;
I didn't have the courage to challenge ideas.

Because I was not used to speaking up my mind,
I tend to remain silent and let other people thought I am a fool than taking the risk to open my mouth.

Then I realised I shouldn't be that way.
In order to progress,
I realised that I must change;
I realised that I must speak up;
I realised that I have Toastmasters Club, which has given me the platform to practice speaking up.

Let's take the opportunity and make use of the time in Toastmasters meeting to speak up.

Let's speak up!

Daily Lift - OMG! FWIW, DEGT (BIL)* (The Wall Street Journal, 6 August 2009)

Do you receive e-mails, text messages, and tweets filled with acronyms you can't decipher? You're not alone; some companies now hire teenagers and young adults to teach their employees information-age shorthand. Make sure your Internet lingo oblivion doesn't lead to a virtual foot-in-mouth comment, like one woman who thought LOL meant "lots of love." She texted a friend, "I?m so sorry to hear about your mother passing away. LOL. Let me know if there's anything I can do."

The Golden Rules of Productive Negotiations (Harvard Business Review, 28 July 2009)

Everyone has had to negotiate at some point in their lives, whether it's buying a new car, discussing beginning salaries, or determining where to eat dinner. Regardless of the topic at hand, here are four helpful tips to have an effective negotiation outcome that parallel the different stages of the discussion. These tips include doing background homework to understand the interests and positions of the other side relative to your own, not negotiating against yourself by giving in too early, using different negotiation "currency" to break stalemates, and always letting someone walk away.

To negotiate effectively, you must be able to communicate effectively. Read six more rules of effective communication skills.
